#AFK: Last Week’s Edition

I’m a full-time digital nomad (cheesy term, I know, but hard to think of something more accurate) working for Automattic, the parent company of and a lot of other companies, like VIP (my team), Jetpack, WooCommerce, Jetpack, Longreads and more. The company is 100% remote and for the most part, completely free of internal emails, which still feels very novel – and oh so freeing – to me (we use P2 blog posts and Slack for all communication).

When we’re out of office, we use the term AFK (away from keyboard), so thought I’d take a spin on that and detail what life is like on the road when not working each week. So with that introduction, here’s the inaugural #AFK post…

While #AFK Last Week:

  • Where I’m at: Malaga, Spain
  • What’s next: Athens, Greece & a long weekend to Italy for the Venice, Biennale
  • What I’ve been doing:
    • Writing, writing, writing – My friend Debbie & I have been co-writing a fiction book, and we’re half way through our second draft. Hoping to send over to our editor by end of the month (fingers crossed)
    • Fumbling around in Spanish – My smoke alarm went off on Monday night (unplugging didn’t solve the problem and instead left me w/ a high-pitched buzz every 30 seconds for, umm, maybe 2 hours) and then all the electricity went out on Tuesday. Lots of lost-in-translation conversations going on via Airbnb
      • Note – I’m embarrassed to say I’ve learned no Spanish while here, nor have I opened the Duolingo app… feeling like “that” American right now
  • Things I’ve been reading / watching:
    • Age of Anger – Fascinating look at how Voltaire and Rousseau seeded the current events of our time (h/t: Amrita)
    • The Prodigals – Mixed reviews on this book. Some beautiful writing, but also pretentious in a way that made me hate millennials (including myself)
    • The Essential Rumi – Reading a few poems per day. Beautiful!
    • The Marriage Plot – One of my favorite books of all-time. Re-reading for writing inspiration
    • Hot Girls Wanted Documentary Series – Emotionally gripping 6-part series on sex, intimacy and relationships that left me depressed (and I generally like the super depressing genre). A few thoughts rattling around in my head after – How much does what we watch / read influence our thoughts and expectations (one episode touched on the blatant racism in the porn industry)?  When do our actions turn from being selfish to cruel? How often do we use substitutes to fill an unmet emotional need?
  • Quotes I’ve been underlining:
    • “Out beyond ideas of wrongdoing and rightdoing,
there is a field. I will meet you there.
When the soul lies down in that grass,
the world is too full to talk about
language, ideas, even the phrase each other
doesn’t make any sense.” – Rumi
    • “I am not interested in money. I just want to be wonderful.” – Marilyn Monroe
  • Thoughts I’ve been thinking:
    • Would I live differently if not performing for anyone?
    • Would utopia be boring?
    • Should I get off of Instagram (I think I’m addicted)? Have only deleted from my home screen for now
    • Should I go to Georgia? Answer: Yes. Booked Tbilisi & Kazbegi
    • Should I go to Cuba?
  • What I’ve been seeing:
